Simple Honey Buttermilk Bread Recipe
Makes: 2 Loaves
Ingredients
- 2 cups buttermilk (room temperature)
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 6 to 6½ cups bread flour (approximately)
Instructions
- Warm the buttermilk until just lukewarm (about 100–110°F / 38–43°C). Do not overheat.
- Stir together the buttermilk, honey, melted butter, and yeast. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until slightly foamy.
- Add the salt and about half of the flour. Mix until smooth.
- Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions.
- Shape into loaves and place into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
- Cover and allow to rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the pans and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
Optional Additions
- Brush the tops with melted butter immediately after baking for a softer crust.
- Sprinkle rolled oats on top before baking.
- Add 1 tablespoon of flaxseed or chia seeds to the dough for extra texture and nutrition.
- Replace up to half of the bread flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
This recipe creates a soft, lightly sweet bread that’s excellent for sandwiches, French toast, grilled cheese, or simply served warm with butter and honey.
