Simple Honey Buttermilk Bread Recipe

Makes: 2 Loaves

Ingredients

  • 2 cups buttermilk (room temperature)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 to 6½ cups bread flour (approximately)

Instructions

  1. Warm the buttermilk until just lukewarm (about 100–110°F / 38–43°C). Do not overheat.
  2. Stir together the buttermilk, honey, melted butter, and yeast. Let stand for 5–10 minutes until slightly foamy.
  3. Add the salt and about half of the flour. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions.
  8. Shape into loaves and place into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  9. Cover and allow to rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  11. Remove from the pans and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Optional Additions

  • Brush the tops with melted butter immediately after baking for a softer crust.
  • Sprinkle rolled oats on top before baking.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of flaxseed or chia seeds to the dough for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Replace up to half of the bread flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.

This recipe creates a soft, lightly sweet bread that’s excellent for sandwiches, French toast, grilled cheese, or simply served warm with butter and honey.
