Going off-grid with food is much harder than simply planting a large garden.

A garden can provide plenty of fresh vegetables during summer, but true food independence requires something more. You need enough calories to keep people working, reliable sources of protein, foods that can survive months in storage, renewable seed, animal feed, water, soil fertility, and a way to preserve what you produce.

That changes what should be grown.

Tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, and herbs are excellent additions to a homestead, but they aren’t enough to carry a household through winter.
