Homemade Garlic Ear Oil with Mullein & Lavender

General Information

Dealing with minor ear discomfort? Garlic-infused olive oil is a traditional home remedy that some people keep on hand for occasional ear discomfort. Mullein and lavender are also commonly used in traditional herbal preparations, making this a simple herbal oil that can be prepared at home with just a few ingredients.

Ear pain can also be a sign of an infection, damaged eardrum, or another problem that needs medical attention, so home remedies shouldn’t replace proper care. Never put oil or other drops into an ear if there may be a ruptured eardrum, ear tubes, drainage, bleeding, a foreign object, or recent ear surgery. Persistent or severe pain, fever, hearing changes, dizziness, swelling, or discharge should be checked by a healthcare professional.

Homemade Garlic Ear Oil

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

Optional Additions

  • 1 tablespoon dried mullein
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender

Directions

  1. Combine the olive oil, crushed garlic, and optional herbs in a small saucepan.
  2. Warm gently over very low heat for about 10–15 minutes, stirring frequently. Do not fry or burn the garlic.
  3. Strain all garlic and plant material thoroughly from the oil. Double-straining through cheesecloth can help remove small particles.
  4. Allow the oil to cool completely.
  5. Transfer to a clean dropper bottle.
  6. If using it around the ear, make sure the oil is comfortably warm – not hot – and stop if it causes burning, increased pain, irritation, dizziness, or other symptoms.
