Colorado River Basin Aquifers Are Declining Even More Steeply Than the River, New Research Shows

New NASA satellite data shows underground water in the Colorado River Basin is vanishing faster than the river itself. From 2015–2024, water storage loss tripled due to climate change. Yet, while seven states negotiate water cuts, groundwater losses remain ignored. “That’s pretty scary,” said Jay Famiglietti of ASU. “It’s the disappearance of groundwater. That should grab people’s attention—and I’m not sure it does.”
