Stephen from Short Season Garden shares his experiences pushing the limits of gardening in zone 3b in eastern Canada. He grows cool-season crops like bok choy, tatsoi, mizuna, kale, spinach, Swiss chard, and carrots through fall and into winter using cold frames, hoops, and protective covers. Despite challenges like early snow, frozen ground, root maggots, and limited daylight, he demonstrates that fall gardening is very feasible, while true winter gardening without heat remains difficult. He shares practical tips for extending harvests and invites others to share their experiences gardening in short seasons.
