The science of STAYING WARM: Mastering the art of layering in freezing temperatures

General Information

Staying warm in winter isn’t about piling on one heavy coat – it’s about using a smart layering system that keeps you dry, insulated, and protected. A proper setup includes a moisture-wicking base layer (like merino wool or synthetics), an insulating mid-layer (such as fleece or down), and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Avoid cotton since it traps moisture and pulls heat away from your body. Don’t forget hats, gloves, neck warmers, and insulated boots, as a lot of heat escapes through your extremities. The key is staying adaptable – if you start sweating, remove a layer to avoid getting cold later.
