Imperial Valley goes dry as farmers act to protect river

Irrigators in California’s Imperial Valley cut off water to 150,000 acres—about a third of local farmland—after a federal deal to conserve Colorado River water. The program pays farmers to skip summer hay cuttings, especially alfalfa, to preserve river levels. It’s a landmark move, but raises big concerns about food production and long-term water access in the West.
