AI leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, are increasingly discussing the need for stronger safety measures as AI development accelerates. But critics question whether safety is the only motivation. With enormous amounts of capital flowing into AI, regulation could also benefit established companies by raising the cost of competition. The bigger question is whether calls to slow AI are about safety, economics – or a combination of both.
