Simple Homemade Cough Syrup Using Everyday Ingredients

General Information

If coughs and sore throats are making the rounds, some people like to keep a simple homemade syrup on hand. It won’t cure an illness, but ingredients like honey, ginger, and lemon have long been used to help soothe an irritated throat and calm a cough.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons raw honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for those who tolerate a little heat)
  • ½ cup warm water

Directions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a clean glass jar.
  2. Stir or shake until the honey is completely mixed in.
  3. Refrigerate and use within about one week.

Take 1 teaspoon as needed to help soothe a cough or scratchy throat. Shake well before each use.

For young children, do not give honey to infants under one year of age because of the risk of infant botulism. If you have a persistent cough, high fever, difficulty breathing, or symptoms that continue to worsen, it’s important to seek medical advice.

Sometimes the simplest remedies are the ones our families have relied on for generations.
