Honey and cinnamon have long been used together as a simple home remedy during cold season. Honey can help coat and soothe an irritated throat and has evidence supporting its use for reducing coughing, particularly at night. Mixed into warm water or tea, it can also make staying hydrated a little more pleasant when you’re congested or dealing with a sore throat.
Cinnamon adds flavor and contains naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Laboratory research has found interesting biological effects from cinnamon compounds, although that doesn’t mean cinnamon can kill a cold virus inside the body. When combined with honey, it makes a warming drink that may provide some comfort when you’re feeling under the weather.
The biggest benefit of honey and cinnamon is simple symptom relief rather than curing the infection itself. They won’t eliminate a cold overnight, but honey may ease coughing and throat irritation while warm fluids support hydration and comfort. Honey should never be given to a child under one year old, and persistent, severe or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
