A urinary tract infection (UTI) can cause burning during urination, frequent urges to use the bathroom, pelvic discomfort and changes in the appearance of urine. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract, and bacterial UTIs often require antibiotics. Home care can still play a useful role in keeping you comfortable and supporting recovery, but it shouldn’t be considered a replacement for appropriate treatment.
Staying well hydrated is one of the simplest things you can do. Drinking water regularly helps maintain urine flow and may help flush bacteria from the urinary tract. A warm heating pad or compress placed over the lower abdomen may also provide temporary relief from discomfort. Cranberry products are sometimes used as well; evidence suggests they may help reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs in some people, although cranberry isn’t considered a treatment for an infection that’s already established.
UTIs are important to take seriously because an infection can sometimes spread from the bladder to the kidneys. Fever, chills, pain in the back or side, nausea, vomiting, worsening symptoms or feeling seriously unwell are reasons to seek medical attention promptly. Anyone with persistent UTI symptoms should also be assessed rather than continuing to rely on home remedies, especially if symptoms aren’t improving.
