US electric grid growing more vulnerable to cyberattacks, regulator says

U.S. power grids face growing cyber vulnerabilities, with susceptible points increasing by about 60 daily, reaching 23,000–24,000 last year, up from 21,000–22,000 in 2022, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) reported. Geopolitical conflicts, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza, have intensified cyber threats, alongside concerns over China and the 2024 U.S. election. Physical attacks on grids rose in 2022, with 2,800 incidents reported, 3% causing outages.
