The Rise of Ticks and a Surge in Mysterious Illness

Ticks are expanding their reach across the globe, thanks in part to changes in climate, land use, and increased contact between humans and animals.

In warm-temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere—especially the U.S., China, and parts of Europe—tick populations are thriving. In the U.S., blacklegged ticks are the primary carriers of Lyme disease, particularly in northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. Lone star ticks are also on the rise, causing unusual conditions like red meat allergies, known as alpha-gal syndrome.
