Summer Heat Waves

A massive heat dome is causing record-breaking heat across much of the U.S., affecting 200 million people. Heat waves, often underestimated, are deadly natural disasters causing more deaths than most weather events. The heat dome traps hot air under high pressure, raising temperatures and triggering storms or tornadoes at the edges. High humidity—partly from cornfields “sweating”—boosts the heat index, making it feel up to 20°F hotter and increasing health risks.
