Sugar substitute could disrupt brain blood flow, researchers warn

A new study in the Journal of Applied Physiology suggests erythritol, a popular sugar-free sweetener, may impair brain vascular cell function and raise stroke risk. Researchers at the University of Colorado found erythritol increased cell-damaging ROS by 75%, reduced nitric oxide by 20%, and raised vasoconstrictor ET-1 by 30%. It also hindered blood clot breakdown. The findings add to growing concerns about the safety of erythritol, widely used in keto and diabetic-friendly foods.
