Researchers discover gut bacteria that remove up to 75% of toxic PFAS “forever chemicals”

Cambridge scientists found nine gut bacteria species—six Bacteroides strains—that can absorb up to 75% of toxic PFAS chemicals from the body. In mice, these bacteria rapidly clumped and expelled PFAS like PFOA and PFNA, which are linked to cancer and immune damage. PFAS, found in cookware and water, contaminate 99% of Americans and persist for years. Though promising, experts stress human trials are needed to confirm safety and effectiveness across different microbiomes.
