Refugee claimants in Canada grow almost 25% since last year

Canada’s population grew by over 47,000 between April 1 and July 1, 2025, reaching 41.65 million—a nearly 9 % increase since July 2021. Statistics Canada notes that legal non-permanent residents fell by about 15,000, counting only valid work, study, or asylum permits. The estimate excludes people ordered deported who remain in Canada, and Ottawa has declined to release exit data on expired visas, leaving the true number of residents uncertain.
