Plan to verify ages of children using social media in Ireland to be considered by Cabinet

Ireland is actively exploring new age-verification measures for social media, including the use of a government-backed digital wallet or ID system to confirm a user’s age. These proposals are aimed at strengthening online protections for children and could eventually result in restrictions for users under 16. However, no legislation has been passed yet. There is currently no law in Ireland that bans under-16s from social media or eliminates anonymous accounts, though privacy and free-speech concerns are already being widely debated.
