Ever wonder why deer or hiking trails are weed free in nature, without anyone maintaining them? With all the soil disturbance by way of foot traffic weed seeds are unable to take hold. They are kicked up, ground down or redistributed. Even weeds that spread by way of underground tubers or rhizomes are filed down with regular footsteps. We can mimic this pattern in our own pathways by raking several times per week. I do an initial weeding in early spring and rake every 2 days or so thereafter. It takes me 10 minutes to do all my paths, resulting in little to no pathway weeding all season.
