Panera Bread announces major layoffs amid end of fresh dough production

Panera Bread is permanently closing fresh dough production facilities in underperforming areas as part of a shift away from baking bread from scratch in its cafés. A facility in Brentwood, Missouri, will close by Sept. 12, affecting 72 employees. As of June 24, four U.S. locations have shut down. Panera will provide severance packages and outplacement services to impacted workers. This move reflects broader trends toward commercialized food production.
