Oropouche virus: What Canadian travellers must know about this insect-borne illness

Public Health Ontario is warning travellers about oropouche virus disease (OVD), also called sloth fever or OROV. This rare virus, found in regions like Brazil and the Caribbean, is spread by insects like midges and mosquitoes. A travel advisory was issued last fall for those heading to Colombia, Cuba, and Bolivia due to rising concerns. Traveler’s are urged to take precautions against insect bites when visiting affected areas.
