🔨 Most Woodsheds Are Built Wrong
Not because of bad lumber — but because of bad spacing.
I originally laid these walls out tight. It looked clean.
But once I counted the material on hand, two things became clear:
1️⃣ I was going to run short.
2️⃣ Airflow matters more than aesthetics.
A woodshed isn’t decoration.
It’s a drying system.
📏 Recalculate With What You Have
42 full-dimension rough-cut Douglas fir 2x4s
12 ft boards = two cuts each
Adjust spacing to stretch material without compromising structure
🌬️ Increase Airflow
Opened spacing to ~3¼” between pickets
Uniform 4″ edge layout per bay
Better cross-ventilation = faster seasoning
🌲 Use Proper Lumber
Full-dimension rough-cut Douglas fir
Strong, stable, built for the long haul
📐 Lay It Out the Analog Way
Mock up one bay
Physically space and adjust
Equal voids across the wall for uniform look
🔩 Fasten It Right
3″ Torx flathead timber screws
Clean, consistent finish
Built to last, not just hold
If air can’t move, your firewood won’t season.
If it won’t season, it won’t burn right.
Build it right the first time.
