Backyard chickens can carry Salmonella on their feathers, feet, beaks, and eggs—even if they’re organically raised and look healthy. The bacteria live in their intestines and often don’t make the birds sick, but it can cause serious illness in humans, especially children. I loved the idea of free-range kids toting chickens, but in reality, we didn’t want them exposed to droppings and the risks that come with them.
